What do I need to start fencing? |
Most clubs have equipment that can be borrowed by beginners, so normal indoor sportswear is sufficient plus some trousers with openings/pockets zipped/sewn/taped closed, or fencing breeches - not shorts. You may also want to bring a towel, a change of tee-shirt and some water to drink. |
Are there any courses? |
Beginners courses for adults are available about every 6 to 8 weeks at many clubs. For children the clubs at Hereford, Malvern and Redditch have good junior groups. Club coaches can arrange courses for groups, if there is sufficient demand. |
How much does it cost? |
Club charges vary but are in the region of £5 per 2hr session, which may include a short individual lesson. Longer lessons with a coach may be arranged privately. . Membership of British Fencing Association is required for most fencing activities. A restricted £10 Social membership is available to those who simply want insurance to fence at one nominated club without other benefits of membership. Membership (currently about £40/year) includes 'The Sword' magazine and insurance cover to fence at competitions. |
Where can I find more information? |
The British Fencing Association website is worth exploring. In addition to technical information the site gives details of events, links to equipment suppliers, links to other clubs and fencing associations and much more. |
